# Case legal details

### Jurisdiction, county & court

- **Jurisdiction** is a two-step picker: choose the level (**Federal / State / Territory**),
  then pick the specific jurisdiction from a searchable list.
- **County** appears only for **state** jurisdictions; it autosuggests U.S. counties for that
  state and also accepts a typed-in value.
- **Court** suggests courts based on the chosen jurisdiction and accepts custom entries.

Leaving any of these blank on a case falls back to the **firm default** (set in Firm settings →
Practice). Placeholders show what the default will be.

### Charges / counts editor

A structured editor with one row per count:
- A **drag handle** to reorder counts.
- An auto-numbered count badge ("1", "2", …).
- A **charge** field that suggests common offenses and accepts custom text.
- A **✕** to remove a count.
- **"+ Add charge"** appends a new row.

Charges are stored canonically as "Count N: …" and are shown broken out (offense, class,
statute) in the case context pane.

### Hearings & deadlines (dates)

In case creation (Step 2) and in case editing, the **dates editor** lets you add rows, each with
a **type** (e.g. "Preliminary hearing", "Trial") and a **date**. Each row becomes a real
**calendar event** on the case. Editing a case reconciles these: added rows create events,
changed rows update them, removed rows delete them.
